holiday picture

I keep going on about the weather, but it was a very long winter, and I am quite desperate for some warmth - yesterday we woke up to a frosty morning!
So it is nice to be remembering some warm places, past holidays.

I have been wanting to make this for some time - a textile picture - a holiday memory.
Back in the winter I printed out some photos which I took on our holiday in Montenegro, and made a rough sketch.

I had some idea about how it is supposed to look, but not sure how to get there.
I got "stuck" on the mountains.
The mountains are a dramatic backdrop to the coastline of Montenegro (and up along the Dalmatian coast in Croatia), so I want to portrait this in my fabric picture also, to make the mountains stand out.
I want this picture to be 3D, not quite so flat.
I have returned to the picture this week and I think I managed to solve the problem. I backed the mountain fabric with some wadding and felt,

and I am using here some of the thick silk threads from 21st Century Threads,
which I bought at the show last month, to embellish it with few embroidery stitches.

I can now start building some houses along the sea front.

This is a long term project; I have some idea where this is going, just not a very clear idea how I am going to get there, so this will be a slow progress!

If you would like to see more pictures from our holiday in Montenegro,
just click on "Montenegro 2016" in "my labels" column on the left side of this blog.
