still applique

It is a beautiful sunny day today, blue sky, it nearly feels like spring is on the way. Oh, we could be easily fooled! We have had all sorts of weather during the past week; sun, heavy rain, strong winds, hail stones, even a dusting of snow; temperatures going up and down.

This morning even the bird bath was frozen over.

There are some small signs of spring in the garden.

New shoots on the hydrangea and the newly planted Compassion rose from David Austin also eager to get going.

I am having a rest from the St Germain quilt for a while, but not from applique.

I have picked up Yoko Saito's quilt, which has been neglected for some time.

I am working on the border now, planting trees, putting up street lamps, building steps.

Sunday out - Brean Down

After many cold and grey days at last we had dry and quite warm Sunday - good time for a day out at last; somewhere we haven't visited before?

Brean Down is a long peninsula jutting out into the Bristol Channel, between Burnham-on-Sea and Weston-super-Mare.

After climbing steps to the top (how many? I don't want to count!) my knees feel the hibernation of the last couple of months. There is an option of a road, which we took on the way back.

The sun could not decide if to stay out or not, so some of the picture are much darker.

This is a view from the top of the Down to the beach below.

A view north - outlines of Weston-super-Mare in the mist. You can see which way the wind normally blows here. 

But it was very calm today.

East - across the Levels.

Walking west - you come to the Brean Down Fort at the end of the peninsula. 

Time to explore the fort and its history.

St Germain quilt - more applique

St Germain quilt - the next step

It has been a cold Sunday, although the sun did come out just briefly. It also tried to snow, but it not come to anything.

I am now starting to applique the outer borders. They are rich in leaves and flowers.

The instructions say - cut three hundred and fifty six leaves and one hundred and ten circles!

These numbers are just too daunting, I think I'll will cut them as I'll go, it will be easier that way.

The two longer sides are over 1.8 m long and shorter just over 1 m.

The bias strips for stems are 1/4 in wide.

This is going to be a long journey.............
